Raghvendra Swami

  1. Phalguna sukla Sapthami is celebrated as Mantralaya Sri Raghavendra Theerthara Jayanthi (Vardhanthi) the day Kaamadhenu, Kalpavruksha, Parimalaacharya, Guru Saarvabhouma, Poojyaaya, Sri Raghavendra swamy of Mantralayam was born. Special celebrations are held every year at Mantralayam on this occasion. Popularly and affectionately called as Sri Raayaru was born in Manmatha Naama Samvatsara, Phalguna masa, sukla Sapthami (7th day of the bright fortnight) on Thursday in the constellation of Mrigasira in the year 1595 at Bhuvanagiri near Chidambaram in Tamilnadu.  Sri Raghavendra Swamy was born in the Divine lineage of Sri Shankukarna, Sri Prahlada, Sri Baahlika and Sri Vyaasaraajaru.

Venkatanatha (poorvaashrama naama of Sri Raghavendra Swamy) was born to Sri Thimmana Bhatta and Smt. Gopikaamba in Goutama Gothra in the family (manetana) of Powsthika Vamsada Beegamudre. It is incidental that H.H. Sri Sushameendra Theertharu the immediate past Pontiff of Mantralaya Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mutt was also born in the same lineage. Sri Raayara Vidya Guru and from whom he took his Sanyaasa deeksha was Sri Sudheendra Theertharu. Sri Raghavendra Swamy lived from 1595 AD to 1671 AD and made Sajeeva Brundavana Pravesha at Mantralayam the seat of His Moola Brundavana.

There are indications in the life history of Saint Sri Raghavendra Swamy that he was of Prahlada’s avathara. Generally we find in Sri Raghavendra Swamy temples, utsava muurthi (procession deity) will not be that of Sri Raghavendra Swamy, but it will be of Bhakta Prahlada.  Main deity (Sri Raghavendra Swamy) will be a replica of his samadhi called Brindavana and Sri Prahlada will also be worshiped simultaneously along with Sri Raghavendra Swamy. As a rarity we find Sri Raghavendra Swamy (Raayaru) in moorthi (image) form at Nanjanagudu Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mutt near Mysore.

Sri Raghavendra Theertharu is also called as Prahlada Rayaru and some of the rituals in Sri Raghavendra Swamy temple are performed exclusively to Prahlada. Perhaps this may the only place where Prahlada is worshiped. Apart from this we also find from the life history of Sri Raghavendra Theertharu that he had chosen this specific spot at Mantralayam for his entry into Brindavana since it was the sacred spot where Prahlada had performed Yajna during his time.

My words are inadequate and it is beyond my capacity to describe Sri Raayaru. I can only offer my humble and sincere salutations to Him by making a simple Pradakshina Namaskara and chanting his ashtaakshari manthra Om! Sri Raaghavendraaya Namah!. He can be understood only when one believes him and experience his compassion through his worship.

    Raaghavendra Raaghavendra Raaghavendra Paahimaam
    Raaghavendra Raaghavendra Raaghavendra Rakshamaam

    Om! Sri Raaghavendraya Namaha

  2. Phalguna Sukla Bidigi (Dwiteeya) is the day the sacred name, the powerful taraka-manthra Raghavendra took birth and it was in the year 1621 A.D. of Durmathi Naama Samvatsara, second day of the bright fortnight. It was on this day Sri Raghavendra Swamy (Sri Venkatanatha Poorvaashrama Nama, of Sri Rayaru) took Sanyasa Deeksha from his Guru Sri Sudheendra Theertharu and ascended the throne of Dvaita Philosophy founded by the great Saint and Philosopher Sri Madhvacharya. This day of Phalguna Sukla Bidigi is celebrated as Sri Guru Saarvabhoumara Pattabhisheka Dina. Starting from this day special celebrations will be held at Mantralayam the seat of Sri Raghavendra Swamy Moola Brundavana, for a period of seven days up to Phalguna Sukla Sapthami the day Sri Rayaru was born.

It was all through a royal lineage in which Sri Rayaru was born with his three previous incarnations all hailing with a rich Royal background. Sri Prahlada was an Emperor; Sri Bahlika was a Kuru King and brother of Shantanu and Sri Vyasa Rayaru though a Saint, ascended the throne of famous Vijayanagara Empire for a brief period during the time of Sri Krishna Devaraya.  Even Sri Raghavendra Swamy (Sri Raghavendra Theertharu) though did not rule any Kingdom was known as a Guru Saarvabhouma of Vedanta Saamraajya.

Sri Raghavendra Swamy took his Sanyasa Deeksha at Tanjavur (Tanjore) in Tamilnadu and was honoured by the King of Tanjavur Sri Raghunatha Bhoopaala. After Sanyasa Deeksha Sri Raghavendra Swamy moved to Kumbhakonam and from where conducted his divine pursuits. Since then and even today there is no looking back and the name Raghavendra went on to become very popular by heaps and bounds like a Taraka Nama. Today Raghavendra is a preferred house hold name especially in South India where we find at least one of the family members’ with that name.

Name is like a manthra (sacred incantation) in itself. A right kind of manthra would yield better results.  Every letter in a name has a meaning.  A correct name makes one highly successful. His (Raayara) Ashtaakshara manthra Om! Sri Raghavendraya Namah is highly meritorious and God gifted. Very few names in the history become popular, everlasting  and match up to the expectations of their given names. One such name in the recent spiritual history of Hindu religion which is very popular, powerful, mesmerizing, considered as a remedy, a healer, a consolation, which people will be longing to recite isRAGHAVENDRA that of Mantralaya Guru Saarvabhouma Sri Raghavendra Swamy popularly called as Sri Rayaru undoubtedly the most acclaimed Saint.
